Wis. could be first to require cochlear implants (AP)

This Oct. 2008 photo released by Ann Brensel shows three-year-old Abigail Brensel in the driveway of her Fort Atkinson, Wis., home. Brensel was born with profound hearing loss and received a cochlear implant in her left ear in April 2008. An insurance company initially declined to cover the cost of the implant, which delayed the surgery nearly two years. Her parents are supporting a bill in the Wisconsin Legislature that would require insurance companies to cover them. The state Legislature passed a bill Thursday April 23, 2009, requiring private health insurance plans to cover cochlear implants, hearing aids and related treatment for those under the age of 18. Gov. Jim Doyle has promised to sign it into law.
