| Pitt forward Cook won't be given extra year |
| The NCAA rejected Pittsburgh forward Mike Cook's request for an extra year of eligibility on Wednesday. His senior season was cut short by a knee injury.
Cook played 11 games before injuring his knee Dec. 20 during overtime of a 65-64 win over Duke.
Under NCAA rules, an extra year of eligibility is possible if the athlete plays 30 percent or fewer of the team's games. Cook played 11 of 32 games - or 34 percent.
He averaged 10.4 points last season. Pitt was 40-8 with Cook as a starter. -- read full article |

| American University basketball coach Jeff Jones, who last season led the Eagles to the first NCAA Division I men's tournament berth in school history, has been rewarded with a contract extension, The Associated Press has learned.
The extension will be announced at a news conference Thursday, according to a university official. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the school had yet to make the formal announcement. Details of the extension were not immediately available. -- read full article |

| KU basketball player accused in BB gun incident |
| Markieff Morris, an incoming freshman basketball player at Kansas, is facing a battery charge after allegedly firing a BB gun from his dorm window.
The 18-year-old, a member of coach Bill Self's 2008 recruiting class along with his twin brother, Marcus, has been ordered to appear Sept. 10 in Lawrence Municipal Court, the Lawrence Journal-World reported Wednesday on its Web site.
Campus police said shots were fired about 11:15 p.m. Saturday from a room in the Jayhawker Towers. -- read full article |

| Stephen Curry will lead Davidson against James Madison in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
The Wildcats are one of seven teams from last season's NCAA tournament in the field of 16, which was announced Tuesday by the NIT Selection Committee.
Purdue and Oklahoma both reached the second round of the NCAA last season while Cornell, Arizona, Mississippi Valley State and Georgia all lost first-round games.

| Lawson pleads guilty to underage drinking charge |
| North Carolina basketball player Ty Lawson has pleaded guilty to underage drinking and driving.
The 20-year-old Lawson appeared in court Tuesday after completing community service and other terms of his plea agreement. Prosecutors agreed to drop charges of violating a noise ordinance and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

| Cyclones' Anderson dies at age 79 |
| Former Iowa State basketball coach Glen Anderson, the third-winningest coach in school history, has died. He was 79.
Iowa State officials said Anderson died Friday at his home in Hot Springs, Ark.
Anderson coached the Cyclones from 1959 to 1971, finishing 142-161 in those 12 seasons. He led the Cyclones to six upper-division finishes in the Big 8.
Anderson also recruited Zaid Abdul-Aziz, one of the top players in school history. -- read full article |

| Mikalauskas out, Soroye back at Virginia |
| Laurynas Mikalauskas, one of the more popular players at the University of Virginia, was dismissed from the team by coach Dave Leitao on Monday, while he announced that Tunji Soroye will return next season.
Leitao said that Mikalauskas, a 6-foot-8 native of Lithuania, is no longer a member of the team because he has not lived up to the standards set by the program. Leitao said he will not elaborate.
