| Varnado returning to Mississippi St. for senior year |
Mississippi State center Jarvis Varnado will return for his senior season after deciding not to turn pro.
The school announced the decision late Monday.
The nation's leading shot blocker for two straight seasons will make a run at the NCAA record for career blocks in 2009-10. He is 19 blocks shy of breaking Shaquille O'Neal's career SEC record of 412 and is 142 from passing the NCAA career mark of 535 set from 1999-2002 by Louisiana-Monroe's Wojciech Mydra.

| Michigan man in U.S. court on sports-fixing charges |
A man at the center of an alleged scheme to fix the outcome of Florida horse races and University of Toledo football and basketball games was ordered Monday to stay away from gambling, even lottery tickets, as his cases move through court.
Ghazi "Gary" Manni, 52, of Sterling Heights, is charged with conspiring with another gambler and jockey Ricardo Valdes to fix races, mostly at Tampa Bay Downs, from December 2005 through 2006.

| Obama toasts Tar Heels at White House |
President Barack Obama says his scrimmage with North Carolina's basketball team last year brought good fortune to him and the team.
North Carolina won the national championship. After the scrimmage, Obama won the state's Democratic primary, he carried North Carolina in the general election and won the White House.
Obama said everyone was excited as the champion Tar Heels visited the White House on Monday.

Former SMU coach Jimmy Tubbs, who was fired after two seasons in 2006 when an internal investigation revealed NCAA violations, has died. He was 60.
SMU spokesman Brad Sutton said Tubbs died Saturday. No cause of death was given.
Tubbs was a popular choice to lead the Mustangs because he'd spent 12 years as an SMU assistant before going to Oklahoma for two seasons under Kelvin Sampson.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino says there is "absolutely no truth" to the rumors that he is returning to the NBA.
Pitino released a statement Saturday saying neither he nor anyone representing him has contacted the Sacramento Kings' about their vacant coaching job.
He says the rumors are hurting the Kings and misleading players he is attempting to recruit to Louisville.

| Feds: Players had several meetings with gambler |
Court documents say former Toledo athletes charged in an alleged point-shaving scheme talked and met several times with two suburban Detroit men who bet large amounts on Toledo basketball and football games.
A federal indictment in Detroit says Ghazi Manni (GAH'-zee MAN'-ee) of Sterling Heights, Mich., met with players near Toledo's football stadium and a casino in Detroit.
Investigators say two other meetings took place at a bank following Toledo basketball games during the 2005-06 season.
