    A former Ohio State defensive end accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl has been sentenced to a year in prison for sexual battery. Jason Simmons, who played for the Buckeyes in the early 1990s, faced up to 15 years in prison when he was sentenced Thursday in Dayton.     Indiana to repair flood-damaged field (AP)
    Crews started pulling up the turf Thursday at Indiana's Memorial Stadium, the first step in replacing the flood-damaged field. Heavy rain that caused flooding across much of central and southern Indiana on June 7 washed out the gravel foundation underneath the football field, leaving a sinkhole in the south end zone and lumps throughout the south side of the field. -- read full article

    Big Ten Network, Comcast reach deal (AP)
    Finally, the Big Ten Network and Comcast Corp. reached a deal.     Paralyzed ex-Texas Tech DT Garland dead (AP)
    Former Texas Tech defensive tackle Stoney Garland, who was paralyzed in a car accident more than a decade ago, has died. He was 33. Garland died at his home in Plains on Wednesday, the school's athletic department said in a statement Thursday. In 1997, the 6-foot-6, 285-pound Garland transferred to Texas Tech from Navarro Junior College and played one year under coach Spike Dykes. -- read full article

    Syracuse's top receiver Mike Williams was suspended for academic reasons and is no longer enrolled at the school. Sue Edson, assistant athletics director for communications, said Tuesday that Williams was not enrolled. Coach Greg Robinson would not elaborate, citing privacy laws.     NC A&T State player dies of heat illness (AP)
    North Carolina A&T State University says a football player has died from complications of heat illness. The school said Wednesday that senior Chad Wiley collapsed after a voluntary workout on campus Tuesday. Officials said he was transported to a hospital after an athletic trainer stabilized him.
