Old friends Stoops, Pelini set to meet (AP)
Bob Stoops and Bo Pelini grew up in the same town, went to the same school and were practically in the same family as their careers developed. They share the background of a being a kid in Youngstown, Ohio, of going to school at Cardinal Mooney High School, of getting their coaching start under Iowa's Hayden Fry and of spending a brief time on the same staff together. -- read full article

Gamecocks QB Garcia to start vs. Vols (AP)
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is sticking with Stephen Garcia at quarterback. Spurrier said after the team's final full practice of the week Thursday that his freshman passer would make his second career start Saturday against Tennessee. Garcia's first start came two weeks ago against LSU. He helped the Gamecocks take a 17-10 lead at halftime, but the Tigers rallied for a 24-17 win and sacked... -- read full article

Pitt doesn't want to repeat 2006 slide (AP)
Defensive back Eric Thatcher knows how quickly a Pitt football season can change. Not for the better, either. The Panthers opened 6-1 in coach Dave Wannstedt's second season in 2006, tying their best opening record in the previous quarter-century. One more victory would have assured a winning season and bowl game appearance. -- read full article

Utah wary as it ventures into New Mexico (AP)
It was a landmark victory for New Mexico -- an upset of No. 9 Utah on Nov. 5, 1994. The Utes came in 8-0, leading the league standings and carrying a confident swagger. Could it happen again Saturday night when No. 10 Utah (8-0, 4-0 Mountain West) visits the Lobos (4-5, 2-3)? Perhaps, but New Mexico's Rocky Long has no plans to mention that victory in any pre-game motivational speech. -- read full article

Paterno vague about injury on radio show (AP)
Penn State coach Joe Paterno was vague Thursday night when discussing what doctors told him the day before about his ailing right leg and hip. "It's not something that can't be fixed," Paterno said Thursday on his weekly radio show. "But it's gonna be fixed. When we do it, I'm not sure." Paterno, 81, injured his leg while attempting an onside kick during a practice two days before Penn State's... -- read full article

Meyer: Tebow's knee 100 percent (AP)
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow played the last two-plus games with a hyper-extended knee, but coach Urban Meyer said Thursday that last year's Heisman Trophy winner has fully recovered from the injury. Tebow hurt his knee Oct. 4 against Arkansas, tweaking it late in the third quarter while chasing a defender following his first interception of the season. -- read full article

Pinkel: Missouri needs to regain focus (AP)
Instead of watching television in the locker room, Missouri players can only gaze at a sign covering the screen that reminds them: 2 p.m. Saturday vs. Baylor. "We've got TVs, but no station is up," defensive lineman Ziggy Hood said. "All you see is the time and the date of the game." It's coach Gary Pinkel's way of combatting distractions, real or imagined, he feels have led to a midseason slump that... -- read full article

Meyer, Richt take motivation seriously (AP)
Urban Meyer has always been a master motivator. While coaching at Utah, he supposedly put "BYU" decals in the urinals to show his players just how he felt about their biggest rival. After moving to Florida, he whipped his team into a frenzied state for the national championship game against Ohio State by wallpapering their hotel meeting room with clippings about how the Gators didn't even deserve... -- read full article

    Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry resumes (AP)
Nebraska's last visit to Oklahoma was an embarrassment to one of college football's great all-time rivalries. Former Nebraska coach Bill Callahan's "hillbilly" comment? The collision of a Nebraska player and an OU spirit group member that resulted in a felony assault trial? Callahan's throat-slash gesture the next year? -- read full article

QB Pike leads Cincy over No. 24 USF (AP)
Not bad for a guy with a broken arm. Playing with a soft cast protecting his surgically repaired left forearm, junior Tony Pike had one of his finest games Thursday night, throwing a pair of touchdown passes and steadying Cincinnati's offense in a 24-10 victory over No. 24 South Florida. Pike was sharp in his second game back since he broke his non-passing arm, which is held together by a plate and... -- read full article

Florida St. suspends WR Surrency 1 game (AP)
Florida State receiver Corey Surrency will miss Saturday's game at Georgia Tech for disciplinary reasons. It's the second time in as many weeks that coach Bobby Bowden has suspended a receiver. Tulsa's Malzahn returns to Arkansas (AP)
Take a glance at the super-sized numbers Gus Malzahn's offense is putting up at No. 19 Tulsa and it's easy to wonder how he'd do coaching in one of college football's power conferences. With the resources and recruiting base of a bigger school, could his creative attack have even gaudier totals than the 55.6 points and 601 yards the Golden Hurricane are averaging? -- read full article

Cincinnati readies 4 QBs for No. 24 USF (AP)
All four healthy quarterbacks took snaps this week for Cincinnati, a way for the Bearcats to make sure they don't get caught numb-handed against No. 24 South Florida. Sense a little desperation? Not just in Cincinnati, either. South Florida (6-2, 1-2) is the last remaining Big East team in the Top 25, an indication of how far the conference has fallen. -- read full article

The first time Matt Williams was called on to kick at Jones AT&T Stadium, he ran onto the field from the student section in shorts and a T-shirt.
