    Three-time defending national champion Appalachian State will open the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs Saturday at home against South Carolina State, while top-seeded James Madison will face Wofford.     Wyoming fired coach Joe Glenn on Sunday, a day after the Cowboys finished their fourth losing season in his six years at the school.     Chuck Long spent the last 4 1/2 weeks presumably thinking his job as San Diego State's football coach was safe through next season.     Paterno has hip replacement surgery (AP)
    Penn State coach Joe Paterno had successful hip replacement surgery Sunday, a day after the Nittany Lions clinched the Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. The 81-year-old coach was expected to get back on his feet Monday following the procedure at Mount Nittany Medical Center, the team said in a statement. -- read full article

    Kansas State to rehire Snyder as coach (AP)
    Bill Snyder, whose turnaround of Kansas State has been called "the Miracle in Manhattan," has told school officials he'll return to coach the Wildcats again.     Quarterback T.J. Yates has returned to the starting lineup for No. 25 North Carolina for the first time since breaking his left ankle in September.
